Relaxed in Siam: Unposed Scenes from the iPhone

Siam and around

One of the problems I come across when using any camera, particularly in Thailand, is the awareness of the lens that a subject has. This may produce odd faces, or (something I hate) single or two-finger gestures, intended to show pose or wisdom. These do nothing of the sort and make any photograph appear artificial.

For years I have carried DSLR cameras with me and these are not easy to conceal. The advent and improvement of smartphone cameras has, like the smallness of the classic Leica cameras, made it possible to take good shots without the subjects necessarily being aware that they are being photographed. This produces a more natural image, although I have to be careful when selecting favourites: some face expressions are less flattering.

In recent months I have been using the iPhone 6s Plus almost exclusively. The software, camera and lens in this are almost identical to that in the iPhone 6s. I find that the area round Siam (and the BTS to and from) is fertile ground, particularly when people are seated: relaxed, or even sleeping.

On this page is a selection of shots taken this year. All have been edited (crop, exposure, contrast). All editing was done on the iPhone, within the Photos app; with some having additional effects applied, depending on the apps that allow access from within Photos.
