This week, the Faculty of Engineering, exhibits the work of final year students who will be presenting posters of their senior year projects. The annual Maker Expo is a way to spread information about student abilities and successes. Visitors will include experts from industry as well as hundreds of high school students who may be considering engineering as a career.
For the past few years, the Faculty of Engineering at the Salaya Campus of Mahidol University has tried to engage more with those outside academia. All Engineering students in Thailand must take an internship, usually at the end of year 3. In their senior year, the students produce a final year project. With 7 departments now, the range of what these groups of students produce is extensive.

In earlier times, the students would present their projects to a panel of experts from their own departments who would subject them to questions: testing their knowledge and examining the limits of the project technology. And that was it. . . .

In a few cases, the ideas might be developed, but all that work (with its frustrations, triumphs, and sometimes tears) was filed away forever. For the last few years, however, the Faculty has put on its Maker Expo for which the project groups produce posters outlining and explaining their ideas. These posters are displayed in the Prince Mahidol Hall, with its stunning yet traditional design.

Those interested are invited to come and see the posters, to ask questions of the students, and to learn about the Faculty. Some of those visiting will be high school students. The schools are just re-opening for the new academic year this week and many young people are considering the future. For some this may be a career in technology and this is an ideal opportunity to find out.
