I had been expecting the 10.9.3 update to OS X, Mavericks, for a while, but when it arrived overnight, Apple also released a number of other updates that may affect the way our computers run: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.05; iTunes 11.2; OS X 10.9.3 and Safari 7.0.3. A restart is required.

Overnight Apple released a number of updates to OS X software:

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.05

A number of new cameras are added to the list here to improve RAW image capabilities for Aperture and iPhoto:

  • Canon EOS Rebel T5 / 1200d / Kiss X70
  • Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II
  • Nikon D4S
  • Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX10

Apple also provides a link for more information on RAW formats supported.

iTunes 11.2

There are a number of improvements here, including to podcast browsing. There is also a related update to the Podcast app for iOS devices and this version is recommended when syncing podcast episodes. With the Mac update, users can

  • Find new episodes easily in an Unplayed tab
  • Browse episodes available to download, or stream in the feed tab
  • Save favourite episodes to keep on a computer
  • Delete episodes automatically when played.
This update also fixes a problem with Genius which could become unresponsive when updating. There are also improvements to stability and performance.

OS X Update 10.9.3

As well as having a number of improvements that improve stability, compatibility and security of a Mac, Apple notes the following specific changes:

  • Improves 4K display support on Mac Pro (Late 2013) and MacBook Pro with 15-inch Retina Display (Late 2013)
  • Adds the ability to sync contacts and calendars between a Mac and iOS device using a USB connection
  • Improves the reliability of VPN connections using IPsec
  • Resolves an issue that prevented Font Book from installing PostScript Type 1 fonts
  • Improves reliability of copying, editing and inspecting permissions of files on an SMB file server
  • Improves reliability of network home directories
  • Improves stability when installing configuration profiles
  • Improves login speed for users in Active Directory groups
  • Includes Safari 7.0.3

On the web page, that last item looks as if it were added late as it uses a slightly different font size (unusual for Apple), but an update to Safari is always to be noted.

A restart will be required.
